September 4, 1994. Saturday.

Finally formally met my roommate this morning after not seeing him all day yesterday. He’s French and his name is Jean-Luc. Seems like a nice guy, but don’t know much about him yet.

Our room here is about 10×12, with cold, hard concrete floors. We each have a single bed, a small desk and strangely enough, a color TV perched atop one of our two bureau/closet things.

I caught a cab to Wangfujing today to try and do some banking, but after waiting in a long line at the bank was unable to cash my traveller’s checks or change my $150 American to Chinese <ed. I can’t remember why.> So I’m reduced to about 15 Yuan. Pretty disappointing. I’m broke.

After dinner, Scott and his Chinese friend Echo (that really is her name), along with Steve, Carl and I went dancing at this club called Susanna’s in Beijing. It was fun, but I owe Scott 20 yuan and this other guy 5 yuan for my part of the cab ride home.

So now I have less than 10 yuan, actually more like 5 and about $150 US dollars that I haven’t been able to exchange yet. REAL Frusterating!

Back to the action from last night. We got back about 2:00AM and we had to wake the fuwuyuan to let us in, as they lock the dorms up at night. I danced and sweated a lot at Susanna’s. Did some “moshing” to some Seattle sounds while these Aussies stared at us funny. The place looked more like a cafeteria than a dance club but it was nice to hear some good music. The crowd as a good mix of foreign students and Chinese. Apparently, at the end of the night there was a fight of some kind involving broken glass or something. I missed out on that action, thankfully.

Personally, I’m starting to adjust better to being here. I’m getting more comfortable and my body clock is much better adjusted too!

  • Wow, Susanna’s. I’d forgotten the name of that place. I believe that’s where my future wife gave me her phone number and told me to call her!

The other thing I remember about Susanna’s is that they usually played Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name” as their final song. I’d never heard them before but thought that song was one of the coolest songs I’d ever heard in my life.

    Wild times, eh?

  • Did you attend WWU and take Chinese from Tomlonovic?
