I used to scoff at social networking websites. Naturally repelled by anything that people claim ‘everyone is doing’ I avoided signing up until finally, after a dozen invite requests peppering my inbox, I finally caved in and joined Facebook. I’m lovin’ it!
I hate myspace. I can understand why kids like it, it’s colorful and busy and can have shiny moving things on it. In fact, most myspace pages I have visited look like a 10 year old created them. That or someone vomited on my screen after consuming a fruitcake and some cherry kool-aid. Myspace’s moving backgrounds, loud music, blinking text and the general look and feel of a mid-90s style webpage give me a headache. To me, myspace gives people TOO much design freedom, most of them clueless about web design. I’m not the only one who feels this way, so I know I’m not crazy.
I like facebook because it’s simple. It might not be cool to some people, but I don’t really care that much about coolness, as I’ve never had to try to be cool. It’s always just happened.
I am concerned about facebook’s privacy issues, which are widely known, but it’s not a deal breaker for me. I combat that by carefully managing my privacy settings and not placing info on my facebook page that I don’t mind people seeing. I also stay away from apps that are suspect.
But the fact that I have been able to re-connect with folks from long ago and far away..and actually keep up with their lives has been fantastic and keeps me logging in each day.
My darling wife has now taken the plunge, after seeing my facebook page, and set up her own profile. She can now easily share photos of our son with her cousins in Hong Kong, and here in the States. After dismissing Facebook, she now logs in all the time, takes The Office Trivia quiz and has adopted her own Fluff Friend.
